PATCHES AND WADS
- Patches –Round balls typically require a lubricated cloth patch for effectiveness. This patch acts as a gas seal. Made of cotton, patches are placed between the round ball and the barrel to provide a tight seal and aid the ball in engaging the rifling of the barrel. Patches vary in thickness to match different diameter balls.
WADS
- Wads – commonly referred to as “wonderwads”, are used under the round balls used in revolvers to prevent chain fires that used to haunt the replica market. These chain fires were caused by flames and vibration of the cylinders causing the adjacent bores to fire off. These chain fires are dangerous to the shooter and surrounding observers. Grease was previously used to prevent this but caused a mess to the hands and revolver of the shooter.
- Our “wonder wads” and proper capping procedures have made black powder pistol shooting much safer and easier clean ups after the fun is done. Wads can also be used in rifles for a cleaner burn and easier fowling clean up.
